Hard Starting

Engine cranks but does not want to start, takes repeated attempts, or only starts with choke or throttle help.

Common areas to check:

Loss of Power

The ski starts and runs but feels weak, slow, or unable to reach normal RPM.

Common areas to check:

  • Impeller damage

  • Exhaust restriction

Bogging / Hesitation

The ski starts but falls flat, hesitates, or bogs when throttle is applied.

  • Exhaust or pump load issues

Backfiring / Popping

The engine pops, backfires, sneezes through the carb, or sounds unstable under throttle.

Won't Idle

The engine runs but will not stay running at idle, idles too low, idles rough, or stalls at the dock.

Overheating

The ski runs hot, alarms, loses performance, or shows signs of cooling trouble.

Flooding

The engine smells heavily of fuel, plugs are wet, or the ski becomes hard to restart after sitting.

  • Incorrect carb assembly

Lean Running

The ski runs hot, surges, hangs at idle, or feels like it is starving for fuel.

Carb or Not Carb?

Not every problem is a carb problem.

Carbs get blamed for everything, but older skis can fool you. A fuel issue, spark issue, pump issue, compression problem, or cooling restriction can feel like “carb trouble” when the real cause is somewhere else.

Before adjusting screws, check the basics:

1. Confirm the basics

Check battery condition, fuel level, fresh fuel, plug condition, spark, and obvious leaks.

3. Look up carb specs

Confirm specs against your service manual before making changes.
